Formerly a sports retailer, opening in 1989, Javelin has evolved and developed with fashion trends, new brands and customer needs. We are consistently updating the products on offer as Javelin strives to offer its fashion-forward customers new and exciting, high-quality fashion and lifestyle. The Javelin brand continues to grow, now occupying two stores; the flagship Bury St Edmunds store and the Sudbury store with Espresso Bar incorporating the Javelin Outlet.

1953 Robert H Clayton opens Clayton Sports at 4a the Traverse, Bury St Edmunds selling traditional sportswear, along with fishing tackle and guns.
1968 His son Robert M Clayton opens his first shop called Sudbury Sports in Friars St, Sudbury
1976 Clayton Sports in Bury St Edmunds is taken over by Robert Jnr when his father retires.
1986 Robert's son Jeremy joins the family business in Bury St Edmunds and introduces an expanded range of skiwear.
1988 Shoe Boks opened at 14 Brentgovel St, Bury St Edmunds specialising in sport's shoes only.
1989 Clayton Sport closes and relocates to 37 Abbeygate St to become the first Javelin. Opened by Olympic Javelin champion Fatima Whitbread,
Javelin offers an expanded range of fashion sportswear, along with guns, skateboarding and skiwear.
1995 Javelin expands its fashion ranges, and soon afterwards the first Javelin satellite store opens at 9 Friars St Sudbury.
1998 The third Javelin opens in Green St Cambridge.
1999 Shoe Boks become Javelin Shoes.
2002 Robert Clayton retires, and Sudbury Sports becomes a new enlarged Javelin.
2006 Javelin Shoes becomes J2 offering an expanded range of ski and surfwear.
2008 Javelin in Bury St Edmunds expands to include 38 Abbeygate St and the store now offers more than 3500 sq feet of selling space.
Javelin in Cambridge closes.
2012 Javelin launches its first transactional website www.javelinonline.co.uk
2013 Javelin in Sudbury closes and relaunches with a new concept as "Javelin at The Anchor"
2014 Javelin celebrates it's 25th Anniversary
2015 Javelin wins the Pure Award for Best of British Independent Retailers East Anglia
2015 In September Javelin at the Anchor is forced to close due to fire damage. December saw the launch of the Javelin Men store at Sudbury
2016 Javelin throws itself into business again with the opening of its refurbished women’s store at The Anchor
2018 The Anchor women's store relocates and joins forces with the Javelin Men Store and Espresso Bar in the Market Hill premises
2019 Javelin celebrates it's 30th Birthday and expands the menswear department in the Bury St Edmunds store
